How to Photograph Your Yard for AI Design

The quality of your AI garden design depends heavily on the input photo. A clear, well-framed shot produces dramatically better results than a dark, cluttered image. Here is how to get it right.

Best Time to Shoot

Ideal: Overcast day or golden hour (1 hour before sunset). Even lighting without harsh shadows lets the AI see all surfaces clearly.

Acceptable: Bright day with some shadow variation. The AI handles this reasonably well.

Avoid: Midday direct sun (creates blown-out highlights and deep shadows), dusk or night (too dark for accurate rendering), rain (wet surfaces confuse material detection).

Framing and Angle

Stand at eye level and capture the full area you want redesigned. For a backyard, stand at the edge closest to your house and shoot toward the back fence. For a front yard, stand at the street and shoot toward the house.

Include boundaries — fences, walls, the house facade, pathways. These give the AI context about the shape and constraints of the space.

Landscape orientation (horizontal) works better than portrait for most yard photos. It captures more of the space in a single frame.

What to Include

• The ground surface (lawn, patio, gravel — whatever is there now)
• Vertical boundaries (fences, walls, hedges)
• Existing structures you want to keep (deck, shed, trees)
• The sky (helps the AI understand lighting direction)

What to Avoid

• Clutter: Remove trash cans, garden hoses, toys, and temporary objects. The AI may try to design around them.
• People and pets: They can confuse the rendering. Clear the area first.
• Extreme close-ups: Pull back far enough to capture the full space. A photo of just one flower bed is too narrow for a full garden design.
• Multiple photos stitched together: Use a single shot. Panoramas and stitched images create distortion that degrades results.

Phone Camera Settings

• Use the standard lens (1x zoom), not ultra-wide or telephoto
• Turn off portrait mode and any blur effects
• Make sure the lens is clean
• Hold the phone steady or prop it against something
• Tap the screen to focus on the center of the yard

One Photo Is Enough

You do not need multiple angles. One clear, well-framed photo of the area you want to redesign is all the AI needs. You can always take another photo of a different section (front yard vs backyard) and design each separately.
