Arden
Best for
- roofs and roof terraces where saturated load, drainage, and a root-safe membrane are the real constraints
- people committing to empty ground plane, few evergreens, raked or quiet gravel
- renters or owners who can change containers more easily than built-in beds
Skip if
- you will not check wind scour, corner uplift, and heat off the membrane before buying plants
- kids need open turf and you will not fence a separate play zone
Common mistakes
For a zen rooftop, the usual miss is dumping white rock and calling it zen while leaving leftover shrubs with no composition. People also ignore wind scour, corner uplift, and heat off the membrane and end up with loose soil and unanchored pots that scour or punch the waterproofing. Names like gravel, maple, bamboo only work when massed with intent — not one of each from the nursery cart.
Plan this first
Confirm saturated load and protect the membrane before any soil goes up. Clear the plane and set one viewing seat, then add as little plant as you can stand. Preview that massing in Arden from the main viewing angle before you buy gravel, maple, bamboo.
